You raise a very good point, David. The writing market when he was writing is very different from the one that exists today, which is worth taking into account. That's why I picked these last paragraphs to quote, as the others dealt specifically with Gault's experiences with the pulp market and selling trends.

I enjoyed Mr. Gault's informed take but comments like his and others always leaves me wondering. Does anybody just write because they enjoy it or is there always the $ at the end? If a crystal ball could be given to reveal that you would never make a dime off writing would you keep at it? And I wonder how many greats we would have lost?

Definitely sounds like a realist. I've pretty much given up on making it big as a writer. I want to get as much done as I can and get it out there and hope that people enjoy it. I've tried quitting writing a time or two but I can't stay away. I just love stories and can't keep from telling them to anyone who might conceivable listen.
